New Didjeridu Music for 2010
-
November 30, 2010
I'll be adding new compositions from my concert a month or so ago. First will be the didjeridu, cello & piano French Cafe Suite - a series of 5 pieces, each about 4 minutes long. The quality is "live" with a not so great piano [the life of a pianist!!]...but they're there. No.4 came out great with didjeridu, cello & my "flamenco feet" doing percussion.
September concerts
-
May 20, 2010
Inspired by meeting Ann today at an open house, I'm posting the concert dates for my new music. Saturday Sep 11th and Sunday Sep 12th. They'll both be in the Berkeley/Oakland area, and I'll post details as soon as I know them for sure!
The concert will include Dan Reiter [cello], Randin Graves [dijeridu], and myself on piano. I'm currently working my way through composing the new music. The piano/cello work "Pas Deux" is completed [and rehearsed]...the new nocturne for solo piano called "Nocturne Flamenco} is coming along...and the 20-25 minutes of new didjeridu chamber music is taking shape. It's a suite of pieces for didjeridu, cello & piano called "French Cafe Suite." There will be 5 pieces, and I've finished no. 1 & 3, with work started on no.5. Dan and I will be performing the Cello Miniatures again [the set of 7 pieces on You Tube...see my MUSIC page. Ciao!
...2010...the year of flamenco
-
January 5, 2010
I can tell already that this year is going to be the year that the 6 years of flamenco dance I've been doing will have a big impact on the music that I compose...just finished a new piano & cello work for a September concert...and as hard as I tried to not let the flamenco sounds creep in...well...I eventually succumbed!!
Maybe it dates back to October last year when I was called in, as a keyboardist, to fill in for a violinist in a flamenco show by Virginia Iglesias. This was a first for me...and after hours [and hours] of getting my hands to move in flamenco sounds and rhythms, it seems that the hands want to keep moving that way!!
Have a look on the photo page to see a couple of photos from just before the show.
...and...every so often I look into the "behind the scenes" statistics for my web site...and I just want to say that it's amazing to see the list of countries where my music is listened to !!!...and I want to list a few of the smaller places that really brought a big smile to my face...Moldova, Seychelles, Cocos Islands, Lithuania & Romania...thank you!!!
Recording of 'Connections"
-
July 8, 2009
...have just uploaded the recording of my flamenco based composition "Connections." It's flamenco based because the idea for it started with the palmas & feet, some of the rhythms of which are straight out of flamenco dances...but the cello and marimba are a classical style, in my own voice. I decided to record it in a cafe to create a more alive sound than from a recording studio...Cafe Noir, cnr. Broadway & Webster in Oakland. The owners Emily & Fred were great...they wanted it to happen in their space...and made us pizza afterwards...also, because of their cool space, the photos look great [see PHOTO page]...
new compositions coming up...

February 8, 2009
I've started work on some new music
...chamber music for cello, marimba and 4 feet. I'm taking basic flamenco rhythms [starting with solea] and overlaying them with my own cello and marimba style. I'm just beginning and it's going slowly 'cos it's a new sound combination for me.
...
...another solo piano work to follow on from my Nocturne. This one will be called Patetico.
I'll be doing both in a concert planned for the end of May [details being worked out at the moment].
I had fun over the last couple of weeks writing a counterpoint to Yo-Yo Ma playing Dona Nobis Pacem. I used my keyboard sounding like a "nylon guitar" again [like I did for recording Trimbach plays Telemann]. These were the steps : 1...download Yo-Yo Ma playing the melody, from indabamusic, into my recording software [Sonar]...2...play along live on my keyboard..3...record the version I liked...4...upload the cello & keyboard version to the indabamusic site. It was cool to "accompany" Yo-Yo Ma!!

AUGUST ’08… YOU TUBE RELEASES
In August I launched the [7] YOU TUBE videos of my latest music…7 cello & piano pieces, all about 60 seconds long. They have the title Cello Miniatures: 7 Scenes from a Day. This is a new format for me – short pieces, with video, and three lines of “poetry” that provide a backdrop for the music.
No. 2, 3 & 4 seem to be drawing the most attention, although no. 7 is doing well through my site. Personally...I'm attached to them all. Hopefully next year I'll get to do them live...it'll be quite a work out!

OCT 11, 12 … HARVEST OF SONG CONCERTS
My composition "Fragments of Baghdad” [for didjeridu, cello, flute & harpsichord] will be played at the Harvest of Song concerts at the Berkeley Art Center, in Berkeley. which feature a range of local composers and their new works.
post concert comment...thanks so much to Tod Brody [flute], Dan Reiter [Cello} & Peter Hadley [Didjeridu, all the way from Connecticut]...it went great!! It was an adventure to play in the ensemble with a real harpsichord.
